What does a Software Engineer do?
A Pickering Software Engineer primarily focuses on software development, but as all of our manufacturing is done in-house you would be able to learn and contribute to the whole lifecycle of the project from Design to Support.
Other responsibilities may include:
- Maintenance of driver packages
- Customized applications development
- Analyse and solve customer problems
Why is this department important?
In test system development, the best hardware is not usable if the software environment is not robust and easy to use. The Software Department ensures that the software drivers and applications provided with our hardware are of the highest quality to provide a good customer experience.
How does this department interact with other departments?
Communication between departments is an integral part of being a Software Engineer and is carried out face to face, via telephone, email or video conferencing. It is important that Software Engineers communicate with other departments to ensure that decisions made by them do not impact on timescales, design criteria and cost.
What tools do Software Engineers typically use?
A Pickering Software Engineering Apprentice will get the chance to use the Microsoft Office suite comprising Word, Excel and Outlook, and various software languages such as C, C++ , C#, .NET, Python, LabVIEW & LabWindows/CVI, HTML5 and Java.
